The Alliance
Française is the world's largest French language teaching and cultural
association and is officially endorsed by the French government.
It is represented in 135 countries and the Jersey branch of the Alliance
opened n January 1996. Their website is
www.afjersey.co.uk
Not only does the
association offer excellent French language tuition, it also encourages
a knowledge of French culture and insight into the French way of life.
Apart from the official courses available, social events such as a
regular conversational "get togethers" are organised.
To quote from the Jersey
Alliance Française website:"When
the French government decided to close the Consulat in Jersey, a few
francophiles and French people got together to find a way of maintaining
a French link on the island. The Alliance Française in Jersey was then
created in 1996 thanks to the will and enthusiasm of Sir Peter Crill,
former Baillif of Jersey, Mrs Pierrette Corsane, former French tutor, M.
Reg Jeune and M. Pierre Aguiton, at the time President du Conseil
General de la Manche.
"
The Alliance Française centre moved from
its original location in basement offices in Hill Street to the
former Jersey College for Girls building and is now to be found in the
St. Helier Town Hall.
Courses - for both adults and children -
start from those for complete
beginners or for people improving their knowledge to those seeking to
gain a diploma such as GCSE, A-Level, DELF and DALF diplomas and CCIP
examinations. Learning can be in large or small groups.
Not only is the French language studied but students are
encouraged to develop a knowledge of French culture and life which
contributes to their greater understanding.
The type of classes available are :
